African Union Public Session on the Theme: “Living Together in Peace”

The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) devoted its 891st meeting, held on 5 November 2019, to a public session on the theme “Living Together in Peace”, commemorating Resolution A/RES/72/130, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 8 December 2017, which proclaimed 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace.

The Council commended Algeria’s efforts, drawing on its national experience in deradicalisation and the fight against extremism, which ultimately led to the adoption of Resolution A/RES/72/130 by the United Nations General Assembly, proclaiming 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace.

The Council also highlighted the importance of national reconciliation, transitional justice and inclusive dialogue in preventing the recurrence of conflicts and encouraging post-conflict peacebuilding.

The Council recognised the important role that women and young people can play in promoting a culture of living together in peace. In this regard, it emphasised the need for Member States to develop policies aimed at empowering women and young people and ensuring their active participation in decision-making and peace processes. In this context, the Council welcomed the establishment of the Global Alliance of Women Mediators, announced by the United Nations during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2019.

The Council decided to dedicate an annual public session to commemorating the International Day of Living Together in Peace, as a forum for continuously raising public awareness and reviewing the efforts made by Member States to implement Resolution A/RES/72/130.
